This is the ATV rider skills course that forms the basis for all other ATV courses offered by National ATV Schools. It ensures that the rider, be they novice or very experienced, has the proper riding techniques to negotiate varying terrain in a safe manner. Participants who successfully and safely complete all components of this course will receive the Canada Safety Council ATV Rider Certification.

Some training providers will claim a 5 ½ hour training program. In reality, if done properly and including breaks (water, food, rest) the ATV Ridercourse is a 6 ½ to 8 hour course that involves approximately 80% riding skills training with about 20% theory. All learning materials are provided for the course. The student rider will need to bring their own safety equipment which will include the following:

  1. Approved motorcycle helmet (CSA, Snell, ANSI, and DOT).
  2. Eye protection (goggles, impact resistant glasses).
  3. Long sleeve shirt.
  4. Long pants.
  5. Ankle supporting closed toe footwear.
  6. Gloves.

The student is also expected to provide their own ATV, which must pass a pre-course safety check prior to being allowed on the course.

It is recommended that the student have a good breakfast prior to the course and bring a lunch and water. The course is physically demanding. Training is held in all but extreme weather and therefore appropriate clothing should be brought.

NOTE:  Current provincial legislation in Ontario dictates that to operate an ATV on a roadway requires a valid driver’s licence, proof of insurance and registration for the ATV. The Canada Safety Council standards which we adhere to state that rider’s must follow ATV engine size restrictions based on age, which currently is:

            6-11yrs old                            70cc or less
            12-15yrs old                          90cc or less
            16-up                                     no restrictions

Furthermore, the exception for driver’s licence, insurance and registration requirements for use on private land in the Off Road Vehicles Act is currently being interpreted as the owner of the land must be the registered owner of the ATV. This would effectively prevent us from legally offering the training to children under 16yrs old if the vehicle is not insured. As of this writing Insurers are reluctant to offer insurance on ATVs under 250cc.

National ATV Schools deeply regrets that it is unable to offer ATV training to children under 16yrs old at this time due to these circumstances beyond its control.

To schedule training or for further information please contact National ATV Schools . Training is offered at a site near you or on location pending site approval.
